When I asked people how long they had been on Keto, it was usually less than four months. The exception was a guy in his sixties who said he and his wife had been on the diet for a year and a half. They both really liked it and he truly thought they would be on it for life because they had both lost a lot of weight, kept it off and didn’t feel deprived at all. He felt it had improved both their memory and their tennis game.
I had talked to many people who said they had initially liked the diet but then decided it was too rigid and there were too many foods and beverages they were missing. It was so hard to dine out (this was pre-pandemic) and if they cheated even for just one meal, it could take them as long as a week to recover and get back into ketosis. So I had to find out why this couple still loved Keto after so long. He was quick to give his wife all the credit. He said she was a wonderful cook and baker. Their refrigerator and freezer were always stocked with Keto foods and this made it easy to stay on the diet. Plus they had both given up alcohol years ago, which also helped since even drinking alcohol with zero carbs slows down your rate of ketosis. Elana Amsterdam wrote the first Paleo cookbook I purchased. When I went to her website, elanaspantry.com, I discovered she had migrated from Paleo to Keto in 2014. After first being diagnosed with Celiac disease, she needed to avoid gluten, which led her to Paleo. But then later after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, another autoimmune disorder, and then MS, she found that eating Keto helped her avoid many of the symptoms associated with her condition. The Ketogenic Diet was created in the 1920s as a treatment for pediatric epilepsy. It was successful in reducing seizures because it reduces inflammation in the brain, which is why people say they can think more clearly on the diet. It was later discovered that changing the metabolic process to go from carb-burning to fat-burning reduces overall inflammation. Since we experience an increase in inflammation as we age, people on Keto may experience improved athletic performance. This is why the guy at the market could see an improvement in his tennis game. Whether you have health issues or not, if you want to be successful on the Keto Diet, I recommend checking out Elana’s website. Many of her Keto recipes are also Paleo and Whole30 and I’ve made many of them. They are healthy, well-written and not labor intensive. In my initial post about diets, I said that what comprised the best diet for someone is one that provides healthy results and is one that can be adhered to for the rest of one’s life. Once people go off a diet, they typically regain the weight they lost. Being able to somewhat modify a diet once someone reaches their target weight makes it easier to stay on. This can be done with Keto by gradually increasing the number of healthy carbs and adding more protein while decreasing the amount of fat. Key is keeping track of your weight, what you eat, and how you feel.
